Disused greenhouse turned into new barn
STUDENTS have put a disused greenhouse at Helston Community College farm to good use – turning it into a new barn to be used during their animal care and horticulture studies.
The enterprising team from Helston, Mullion and Penryn saw the potential of the site, salvaging parts of the greenhouse to cut costs.
The framework was re-used after the students excavated and cleared the site, improving access.
A new floor was created from six cubic metres of concrete mixed by hand, while the college post-16 students built the walls.

Year 10 students set about constructing and erecting the roof while on work experience week.
To make the project sustainable, second-hand timber from bus park fencing, together with fixtures and fittings from the former day nursery, were all brought in to help minimise the total cost.
The project was supervised by Nigel Philpott, head of construction studies at Helston, together with Nigel Eathorne and Dave Cummings.
Pat McGovern, head teacher at Helston, was impressed with the result and congratulated the team, praising the hard work of all the students who had taken part.
