Doctorate 'unmerited but very welcome', priest tells university
A long-serving priest has been awarded an honorary degree from Plymouth University. The Reverend Nick McKinnel, the Bishop of Crediton, who has served as a priest in the area for 18 years, was awarded an honorary doctorate of theology on Thursday. The university said he had been chosen because he was a 'team player with enormous integrity and warmth'. Speaking after the ceremony, Rev McKinnel said: 'The growth of the university has been one of the most impressive developments in Plymouth over the last decade. It was great to be among a lively group of students who were graduating and to be honoured in this way. They had worked hard for their degrees. Mine came only by grace – unmerited but very welcome.'
