A DOG was rescued from the sea off Trevose Head yesterday by Padstow RNLI.

The Tamar class lifeboat 'Spirit of Padstow' was called out at 9.50am to reports of a small terrier which had fallen off the North Cornwall cliff.

The lifeboat crew arrived on scene and found the dog on the rocks at Stinking Cove, around from the lighthouse.

A smaller inflatable vessel was launched and volunteer crew member Tom Norfolk swam ashore to retrieve the dog until the coastguard cliff rescue team arrived.

The dog was then carried up the cliff and reunited it with its grateful owner.

“Once again Thank you Steve for making me realise that people like you do NOT volunteer!!!”

“In america people who call out emergancy services for pet rescue do have to pay. And I do have some much loved pets in my family. My father paid over 1000 pounds to keep his very old dying dog alive for just a few weeks. But I can tell you now if one of our dogs goes over the cliff the only person who will take any risks to get him or her back will be me.
Just because the people in emergancy services are strangers who we never met it does not mean we should not care about them. We should think hard before asking them to take any risks.
And for the people who are saying that I endorse the suffering of animals, this is not the case. I just put people first. Always and in every circumstance, whoever they are.”

“It really does make me realise just how much I prefer animals when I read comments like these ones posted on here.

And also I am so glad that if I was involved in a accident with my horse/ dog that people like you DO NOT volunteer for the rescue services!!”

“Shame on you Bertie & Steve! Its awful to think that some people would leave a dog to suffer a slow death. The RNLI did not 'risk their lives' to carry out this rescue no more than you do crossing the road, it was a standard operation for them is used as training so they are well prepared for saving human lives. And as for the cost? Its shudders me to think you could put such a low price on an animals life. I also donate to the RNLI, but I would stop in an instant if I thought they left animals to die for the sake of such minor costs”

“Steve, I couldn't agree more. Whilst I sympathise with the dog owners (even if they are to blame) I have to say the rescue of a dog is not worth the risks involved to human life. Furthermore, there was the possibility that rescuing the pooch could impede response times to a human rescue? Anyway, well done RNLI, you boys (and girls!) do a job that I certainly couldn't.”

“Steve.. I don't think the RNLI would have risked their lives to rescue the dog, they are far too sensible and well-trained for that so stop exagerating Steve. I too contribute to the RNLI and I am pleased and very grateful they don't share your bigotted vews.”

“I hate to say it, Steve, but you've entirely contradicted yourself. The RNLI is, as you correctly point out, staffed by volunteers. Hence they chose to carry out the rescue.

Apart from anything else it represents a good training opportunity, (in the same way as the Royal Navy conducting S&R missions from Culdrose).”

“Tracey. I think it's very unfair for someone to ask an RNLI volenteer to risk their life to save a dog. That tells me the owner thinks less of human life than a dog. And if the RNLI do come to save a dog and feel the risk to their own lives is low and make the rescue then YES the owner should pay.
And finally when I read some of the reasons people call out the RNLI I fear it will not be long before some idiot calls them out for a stupid reason like I lost my car keys in the sand.
The RNLI is my favorite charity and when I give thinking that money is saving someone life only to find out it went on saving someones dog I do feel disapointed.”

“Steve, animals are living creatures that suffer emotions, pain etc and do not deserve to be left to die becuase some small minded people don't care about anyone but themselves in this world, where as keys are just non living objects. Hence you can be prosecuted for animal cruelty but not key cruelty. I hope that helps you out in comprehending why we recue animals but not keys.”

“.What part of the article says that the dog was without a lead?

AND So basically unless the general public think it's a emergency we should not call out the rescue services? GET REAL!!”
