Dog savages swan
AN injured swan is likely to have to be put down after being attacked by a dog at Lostwithiel.
A member of the public called the RSPCA after seeing the bird in the river at Coulson Park on Monday afternoon.
It was unable to stand, and the witness thought it had been attacked by geese.
An RSPCA inspector called on the fire service as they had access to a boat and a 4x4 vehicle. The swan was recovered and taken to a local vet, who said the injuries were consistent with a dog attack.

The bird's condition deteriorated overnight and the RSPCA has said it might have to be put to sleep.

“I was one of the people who rang the RSPCA after witnessing the two geese attacking the swan for over 30 minutes. These geese have attacked children and small dogs in the recent past and are a menace. They are not wild geese, but a domestic variety who have been dumped there when the previous owners no longer wanted them. The RSPCA Inspector who rang me said it was consistent with either a Fox or Dog bite, but that the broken wing was due solely to the geese attack. A Swan is capable of breaking a mans arm with the sheer strength of its wings, so what are the geese capable of? The attack I witnessed was brutal, caused great distress to the swans mate who was swimming up and down trying desperately to distract the geese. They had the swan pinned down on the river bank, jumping up and down on it, ripping out feathers and pecking at it in a sustained and viscious attack. Several people who live in Lostwithiel have complained about these geese attacking dogs and children, and yet they are allowed to stay in a public place? The people who continue to feed these geese with bread etc are just encouraging them to come into the play area where children are and I'm sorry to say, but its just a matter of time before a child is attacked again, especially if they happen to holding a pastie or sandwich.”

“The dog should also have been put down and the owner charged as he/she clearly has not trtained the dog properly. It's not really the dog's fault ti was lumbered with a bad owner.”
