POLICE officers investigating a spate of thefts from cars and sheds in Hayle shortly before Christmas brought in dogs to track two men who ran away dressed in black and carrying bags.

One, Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor Lee Brembridge told Truro Crown Court, was traced to the home in Harveys Way of 19-year-old Kieran Coe, who admitted handling stolen satellite navigation devices and stereos and being in possession of 30g of cannabis.

Paul Gallagher, for the defence, said that Coe had not been one of the men who ran from the police, abandoning their stolen property as they fled. But he accepted he had bought stolen goods from them and claimed he had been looking after the cannabis and a dealer's list for a friend in return for a small personal supply.

Judge Graham Cottle said that Coe did not have the excuse of a poor background and lack of parental guidance.

"He got in with the wrong crowd, one of whom is still in custody," said Mr Gallagher.

The judge imposed a 12-month community order with participation in an education and unemployment training programme and 100 hours of unpaid work.

He also warned Coe if he breached the order he would go straight to a young offenders' institution.

"You have brought disgrace on yourself and your family," he declared.
