Doyen of Victorian sea painters joins 'friends' for major show
An artist who made his home in Falmouth in the 1880s and became a celebrated Royal Academician is being celebrated next month with an exhibition at the town's public art gallery.
Charles Napier Hemy was one of the leading maritime painters of his generation. Born in 1841, he moved to the Cornish port in 1881 to paint the sea and scenes of navigation on the River Fal and Fal Estuary. Among his most famous works is Along Shore Fisherman(pictured).

After his death in 1917, his friend, Sir Frank Brangwyn,wrote: "Among the artists of the British School who have made the sea their special study, Hemy's position is secure."
Falmouth Art Gallery is celebrating his art and influence in Hemy And Friends, which opens on November 24 and continues until next February.
