A MOTORIST apologised to police after registering nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol while driving.

Alexander Wake, 22, of Tolcarne Farm Cottages, Newlyn, pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates' Court to drink driving at Helston on September 2.

Alison May for the CPS said police stopped his car in Helston at 2am after it was seen being driven erratically in Penzance Road. The defendant smelt of liquor and was obviously in drink, admitting to them: "I have had quite a bit."

He tested later at 69mcg in breath.

Mark Charnley, solicitor for Wake, said he did not set out to drive that morning. He had been out in Falmouth and had some drinks but then stopped drinking, having water instead for a considerable time. He then got a taxi to where his vehicle was parked in Helston and feeling all right decided to drive.

Wake was fined £270 and £55 costs and surcharge and banned from driving for 17 months.
