A STUDENT from Padstow has won a hotly contested road safety quiz, one of the key events held during Cornwall College's Drink and Drugs Awareness month.

Jack Willis, a full-time plumbing student at Cornwall College's St Austell campus, beat off competition from two other campuses.

Students answered questions relating to the legal drink-drive limit, and the length of time it takes our bodies to process alcohol. The quiz, organised by Cornwall Council's Road Safety Unit, caught many by surprise.

"I didn't realise that you could still be over the limit in the morning," said Jack.

As well as entering the quiz, Jack took part in a radio-controlled driving challenge where students competed in time trials while wearing goggles which simulate the effects of alcohol on the brain.

John Macneill from Cornwall Council's Road Safety Unit credited the event with raising awareness about drinking and driving.

"It's a practical, and fun way to show new and potential drivers how even a small amount of alcohol can impair their driving," he said.
