Duchy celebrates 10-year book link
Cornwall Council celebrated a ten-year association with a leading book charity this week that has seen more than 350,000 books, worth around £1.4 million, gifted to children in the Duchy.
The county is among the top 5% in the country for its high standard of book gifting through the Bookstart programme with more than 100,000 packs given to babies and children over the last decade. Under the initiative, run by the Booktrust, a leading independent national charity that encourages people to read, packs containing three free books are gifted to every child in the county once their birth has been registered.
The council also participates in a number of other activities with the charity, including the Bookstart Bear Club and story and rhymetime.
To celebrate the association councillor Andrew Wallis, portfolio holder for children and young people, was joined by a giant Bookstart Bear at Truro Register Office.
