Engineers battle rising tides to deliver broadband
Engineers have been battling the tides to help deliver superfast broadband to a Westcountry village.
They are laying around 700 metres of sub ducting which will be used to carry a cable for delivering high internet speeds to Tresillian, near Truro.

It is part of a £132 million Superfast Cornwall partnership, which is rolling out faster broadband to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Some 130,000 km of cable will be needed to supply 80% of Cornish homes with fibre optic internet speeds of up to 330mb per second.
The initiative is a partnership between the EU, BT and Cornwall Council.

Over the next three years it will bring superfast broadband to all of the 250,000 premises across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Work to lay the sub ducting to Tresillian needed to be done through the night to minimise inconvenience for traffic on the A390. A pump and a tanker were used to keep tidal waters low while the underground work was carried out.
A BT spokesman said: "The superfast broadband is much, much faster than the national average of 9mb per second. The project is a huge step forward for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. For both businesses and families it provides much higher speeds."
The work was the latest stage of a project to bring superfast broadband to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, funded by the EU, BT and Cornwall Council.
It is hoped the scheme will boost the economy of the region, enabling businesses to work more effectively.

“Broadband ? Whats that ?. I can still only get dial up, if I could find any equipment that works with dial up. I'm now on the daily trip to the library in St Austell if I need to do any buisness online.
I can't relocate my buisness here until I can have broadband.”

“80% of homes to be supplied with superfast 330mb per second broadband umm dont think so as even BT are only going as far as the Cabinet (box in road)FTTC, very few places are getting to the House FTTH. As that would mean putting fibre optic cables to your house. Which would mean your average speed would be around 45-75mb per second.
Please reporters get your facts straight as I get rather "miffed" with these supposedly high speed broadband for cornwall reports!”

“I run an internet based business in the Isles of Scilly and would love to know when we are scheduled to get superfast broadband. I have inquired about it but there are no works scheduled to upgrade our exchange and nobody seems to have any idea when it might happen. Superfast is 330mb per second, the national average is 9mb per second and I get 1.5 mb per second! I'd kill for the national average!”
