Erratic Truro driver had astronomical level of alcohol in her system
A THEATRE company production manager had an “astronomical” amount of alcohol in her system when she drove through Truro so erratically that numerous drivers reported her to the police, a court has heard.
Maria Baker, 36, was working in Truro on the play Pitmen Painters on July 27 when she was spotted by other motorists at about 6pm driving a friend’s Nissan X-Trail at the Treliske roundabout across the middle of a lane, driving very slowly and holding a number of other vehicles up.
She appeared at Truro Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where she admitted driving with 98 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes – nearly three times over the limit.
Alison May, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said police had received a number of calls about the defendant’s driving and that one witness who followed Baker, of Meadrow, Godalming, Surrey, described seeing her screech to a halt, mount curbs and drive across the Sainsbury’s roundabout “as if there was no one else on it”.

He also described Baker’s speed as being “very erratic” and said it appeared she might be drunk, the court heard.
Police caught up with Baker in a car park on St Austell Street where she was arrested.
In police interviews Baker admitted that she had been driving the vehicle, saying that she had drunk two glasses of wine over a late lunch.
Elliott Moore, for the defence, said Baker did not have a problem with alcohol and that she had been drinking in the afternoon because he partner was upset.
Sentencing Baker to pay a total of £1,090 in a fine, prosecution costs and victim surcharge, magistrates said: “The amount of alcohol you had in you at the time of the offence was astronomical.”
Baker was disqualified from driving for two years.
