Exhibition coincides with arrival of Tall Ships
TO coincide with the arrival of the Tall Ships at Falmouth, Gallery 49 in the old High Street is showing a collection of old etchings and other prints with a maritime theme.
The main body of the show is made up of coloured etchings by Claude Hamilton Rowbotham – a Falmouth artist born in 1864 who made many studies of the boats and ships on the waters around Cornwall.
His coloured etching process was supposedly a secret that was known only to himself, and one that died with him.
Rowbotham lived and worked in the town and he formed the Falmouth Art Society in 1907, a group that held lectures and exhibitions in a loft at Upton Slip, off Church Street.
Alongside the Rowbotham prints the show will feature pictures by Claude Lorrain, Stephen Parrish and views of Falmouth and other maritime Cornish scenes by Victorian artist Peter Graham RA, J Morrison Townley and more besides.
The exhibition runs until September 14 and the gallery opens from midday to 5.30pm daily.
