AN exhibition in Falmouth depicting war had added poignancy as the man behind the images is a former soldier.

Voices of War at The Poly is about Martin Webster's experiences over a 12-year career with the Army.

He said: "I'm not a journalist, I'm no politician, I'm an infantry soldier just telling my story true through poems, music and art."

Martin, of Falmouth, joined the Army after completing a diploma in arts at University College Falmouth.

It saw him tour the Falklands, Jordan, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Germany, Canada, Northern Ireland and Iraq.

From October 2003 until March 2004 he was stationed in Iraq.

In February 2006 a film of a beating by British soldiers on Iraqi civilians sent shock waves across the world.

Martin was the soldier who shot the footage.

"On that day we were in a situation that some people might not believe or understand.

"We heard the story from the media and we heard the story from the MoD. We even had the story from the boys that were assaulted.

"But you never heard the soldiers' side of the situation and that is what I hoped to show.

"I am not here to say sorry, nor do I want sympathy. I just want to tell people in my own way about my experiences of war."

He added: "I was never the brightest of kids, a bit of a day dreamer who loved to mess around.

"I always thought I would be famous for something, but not as horrible as the man who filmed the beating of some children behind a wall."

Martin suffers from post traumatic stress and is deaf in one ear since the battles with Shia militia gunmen in al-Amarah during the time he was in Iraq.

Voices of War is a group of ex-servicemen who are not happy with the outcome of the Iraq war.

Some of the artwork can be bought online and a percentage goes to the British Legion.
