A Cornish town is gearing up for what will be its busiest Harvest Fair weekend in years.

Second only to Flora Day in Helston's social calendar, it is now held over a weekend. This year's starts tomorrow and ends on Sunday, but in the 1980s, in particular, it ran for more than a week.

This year it will also include Helston's second Hellysardh street festival, which will entail the closure of Coinagehall Street on Saturday.

The traditional harvest fair events – horticultural, pet and dog shows, the carnival and Cornish wrestling – will be interspersed with many new attractions, courtesy of Hellysardh. This was launched last year, but 2012's is set to be bigger and better.

One of the prime movers behind the street festival, Helston's community network manager Charlotte Chadwick, said: "There really is something for everyone."

RNAS Culdrose will be officially involved, with its military wives' choir performing in Coinagehall Street between 11am and 11.30am on Saturday, followed in the afternoon by more music from the station's volunteer band.

There will also be a varied programme of music in the town's pubs and at the Epworth Hall in Coinagehall Street.

Scarecrows made by children at special workshops will adorn local shops and will then also be involved in the annual Helston carnival.
