Fall in the demand for care home places sees St Hilary set to close
A LONGSTANDING residential care home in Bude is being closed because there is no longer the demand to keep it open.
Cornwall Care, which provides care to more than 1,700 older people in Cornwall, said occupancy at the 37-bedroom home in Bramble Hill had dropped to 17 residents and that it would close on March 3.
Residents, their families and staff have been informed and Cornwall Care is working closely with Cornwall Council to help residents find a new place to live.
Cornwall Care chief executive Douglas Webb said: "Closing a home is not a decision we take lightly but a lack of referrals means St Hilary has struggled with occupancy rates for some time and we had to close a wing last summer.

"These challenges are not unique to Cornwall Care and reflect a general national trend away from residential care towards services being delivered in people's own homes, and when they do need care it tends to be more specialist in nature to cater for more complex needs like dementia.
"Our priority now is to ensure that we identify the best possible alternative accommodation for all the residents at St Hilary because their welfare is paramount.
"We understand that a number of residential homes locally have vacancies so we are hopeful that our residents can remain in the local community.
"Staff at St Hilary will be able to apply for redeployment within Cornwall Care in other homes or community services, and our domiciliary care team in Bude is currently growing."
Mr Webb said Cornwall Care was responding to the changing needs of older people in Cornwall by planning to build a series of care "villages" that would have a specialist nursing home at their heart to meet nursing and dementia care needs, surrounded by extra-care housing where older people could live independently but benefit from additional support if required.
