Falmouth schools and communities light up with annual Christmas fairs in Penryn, Ponsanooth, Mylor and Swanpool

A WEEK of Christmas fairs, fêtes and festivals offered a chance to get into the seasonal spirit as local schools joined forces with their communities.

Children launched their Christmas fair with a Secret Santa at Mylor School on Friday, where children chose a gift for their mum or dad. At the fair, there were refreshments, craft and gift stalls, and head teacher Chris Lea said: "It was a very lovely afternoon. Father Christmas turned up and all the children had their photograph taken with him – and one or two parents too."

The Old Brewery Yard in Falmouth held its annual fair offering great gifts and quirky offerings under its canopy of Christmas lights – the first time it has been included in the town's festive display.

Penryn Junior School raised more than £2,000 from its Christmas fair. The school offered its special thanks to everyone who worked on the stalls and to the Friends of Penryn Junior for organising the event.

The Ponsanooth craft fair at the Stag Hunt formed part of the village lights switch-on for the first time. The fair featured stalls of gift ideas and there was a chance to meet Santa in his grotto and enjoy a cup of tea and a mince pie. A barbecue and mulled wine got people in the mood before the traditional lantern parade, featuring children from Kennall Vale School before Santa switched on the lights at 7pm.

At Marlborough School, there was a Christmas fair marked, the first fundraising event by the newly formed parent group the Marlborough Mariners. Santa set up in his grotto in the outside classroom and children were encouraged to take part in a Secret Santa to buy gifts for friends and family.

Head teacher Richard Gambier said: "We raised about £600 but more valuable than the money was the spirit of the day, which was lovely."
