REDRUTH Rugby Club has vowed to ban supporters who racially abused a black player in Saturday's home match.

An e-mail from national league two south rival Canterbury on Sunday expressed disappointment that some Reds' supporters had "jeered" winger Kwaku Asiedu at the Recreation Ground.

Reds' bosses immediately condemned the supporters' actions on the club's website, saying the behaviour of a small section of spectators on the East Bank would not be tolerated. It said opposition players, officials and supporters should be treated "with proper respect" and threatened expulsion from the club and a ban from entering the ground.

It also tweeted a similar reminder to all supporters.

Reds' club secretary Roger Watson was "absolutely horrified" and said: "We've taken as strong and prompt action as we can by putting a piece on the website and we will be putting a piece in the programme and having announcements over the PA at the next home game."

The club is trying to identify those responsible for the abuse by contacting supporters who regularly watch games from the East Bank.

Mr Watson said: "Once we identify them there will be a proper disciplinary hearing ... to give them the chance to have their say in their defence. We have got procedures within the club, a disciplinary committee which will sit and talk to the people concerned and decide on the course of action.

"If they are members and are found to have been involved in it, their membership will be terminated."

Club officials have sent an apology to Mr Asiedu and will look to apologise in person at the away fixture.

“An absolute disgrace for the people of Cornwall, UK, world, humanity. Who do people think they are who feel they can do and get away with pathetic acts of racism. They should be tracked down and a harsh punishment should be given to them to give the message that racism will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
