They were taking part for the first time in the national open farm Sunday initiative organised by Linking Education and Farming.

With the sun shining, families were given an insight into real life on the farm, getting close up and feeding some of the farm animals including cows and calves, sheep and some newly hatched chicks. Children were treated to rides on the 'quad bus' which took them down to a nature trail where they were able to spot many different kinds of wildlife on the Penrose estate.

They also had the chance to sit on vintage and modern tractors and make insect houses out of bamboo before enjoying a scenic walk to the farmyard to see the milking parlour and the 'maternity ward', with some children timing it just right to see a baby calf being born.

Some afternoon tea was enjoyed in the farm garden, which was served by members of Porthleven School's PTA, raising £380 to go towards equipment for the schoolchildren.

The Wallis family said: "We would like to thank all those who took the time to help with the event and those who came along."

They also said that with so many of the visitors asking when the next open day was, the family was now looking forward to next year's open farm Sunday at Penventon.

Comments from visitors this year included "thanks for a great day out", "wish this would happen more than once a year", "amazing day", and "a lovely day for children and adults to learn about how a farm is run".
