Film fans take a look at new cinema plans
DETAILED plans for a state-of-the-art cinema in Newquay have been revealed to the public.
WTW Cinemas displayed the plans for residents to view at the town's tourist information office in Marcus Hill on Wednesday. The design was put together by cinema design specialist NBDA Architects of Cheshire. Initial feedback from residents proved positive with many feeling a cinema would be a major boost for the town – and pull back lost trade from Truro and St Austell.
"We have had a fantastic response from residents," said Mark Williams, WTW Cinemas' project manager.
"Speaking to people in the street, people are surprised that Newquay doesn't have a cinema already."
The four-screen cinema will be set over two floors. The foyer, housing a popcorn kiosk and ticket office, may also have a cafe or ice-cream parlour, said Mr Williams. Screen One will be the biggest theatre, with 220 seats, and may include a stage area with lighting for live events. All screens will have digital projection systems. The technology used in the Newquay cinema is set to eclipse that available at St Austell's new White River Place complex – also owned by WTW Cinemas. "All four theatres will have big steps, stadium seating and the biggest screens possible – around 11 metres by six metres," said Mr Williams.
The company plans to do something 'interesting' with the cafe area – taking inspiration from cinemas around the country. Mr Williams added: "We're planning to take ideas from other cinema designs – for example, the best bits from the new cinema in St Austell – and incorporate them into the design."
Residents were also positive about the new plans, saying a cinema was needed in Newquay.
Excellent scheme
"It's excellent," said resident Colin Manning. "I can't wait for more things like this to come to the town, as we have to travel into Truro or St Austell for the cinema at the moment. We'd be able to go more often to a local cinema."
Chris Blount said: "It's an excellent scheme and long-awaited in Newquay. I look forward to the new digital projection system."
WTW Cinemas is now awaiting planning approval from Cornwall Council, after the application was submitted last month. The scheme has already won the backing of Newquay Town Council, however, which supported the plans when they were heard in May.
Mr Williams added: "If we receive the go-ahead, we would anticipate opening the cinema in late 2010 or early 2011."

“The sooner the better, What an excellent facility to have especially with all out wet Summers. We have no other cinema in the area for miles and the councillors should just say "YES" instead of all these delays. Get on with it as we need this Cinema, well done to WTW they build comfy and classy Cinemas so Newquay should be proud.”
