Fine conversion in a truly magical setting
Believed to have once been part of the domestic buildings of Wembury House, in the days when horses pulled the plough, the Stables is a luxury conversion of 19th-century country-house stables.
The bricks come from the factory that once operated just across the river – the colour and style can still be seen in some local structures (such as a number of redundant railway bridges) built in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Next door to the Stables you can still see the original walled gardens to Wembury House and the fish pond at Thorn which was a food store for the big house.
The stables were built in this position so as to be close to the centre of the domestic activity that fuelled the main house.

Conversion work on the almost derelict Stables commenced in 1993 and was finished in May 1994.
The building has been a much-loved home ever since, with the owners having further improved the accommodation and enhanced the gardens to create a truly stunning, single-storey country retreat.
The home focuses around the enclosed central courtyard with many rooms opening directly on to this secluded and sheltered space.
The accommodation comprises entrance hall, cloakroom, utility room with space for a washing machine and tumble dryer, kitchen/breakfast room with a range of units, black granite work surfaces, integral dishwasher, range-style cooker, island unit, exposed wooden floor, bookshelves, and fireplace with brick inset, dining room, sitting room with exposed wooden floor and fireplace with heavy timber lintel, family bathroom, four bedrooms, and two en-suite bathrooms.
Outside we find a stone-built log store, double garage, and a sheltered inclosed courtyard with feature raised fish pond, corner borders and a profusion of scented rambling roses and jasmine.
In all, the grounds extend to nearly one acre and include gently-sloping lawns rising to a well-stocked orchard, including cider, apple, plum, cherry and pear trees.
A small stream tumbles along the front boundary of the grounds, down to Thorn Pool.
The Stables is available through Luscombe Maye (01752 880100) at the guide price of £695,000.
