Firefighters call off strike at eleventh hour
A five-hour strike planned by firefighters for across the Westcountry later today has been called off at the eleventh hour.
Both Cornwall Fire Rescue Service and Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue Service had prepared contingency plans to be implemented as the action took place tonight. The strikes, scheduled to take place between 6.30pm and 11.30pm, were designed to be the second to take place within a month.
The Government had wanted firefighters to work until 60 before they could retire on a full pension but the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) argued that was too old.
The strike was called off after the FBU said it was presented with a similar deal to those received in Scotland that would provide safeguards for those aged between 55 and 60.
