Fixtures come thick and fast as spring looms

ALL eight Combination League games played last weekend produced a winner and for once every team scored a goal, writes Paul Smith.

For the record, the last time that happened was back in the first week of December. Of those eight games, seven were wins for clubs in the top half of the table, while Falmouth Athletic were the only team in the bottom half to gain points. Since they appointed a new manager, seven games ago, they have won 16 points, while previously they only managed four points out of a possible 36.

At the start of the season some pundits made predictions for where clubs would finish the season. I tipped Illogan to win the league and Newquay to finish in second place. Newquay are down in 18th place just above the relegation zone, having lost six games in a row and last winning a league game on October 20. I had thought as they had a strong crop of youngsters last season, often having multiple players in the County Under 18s squad, they would be set up to push for the title this season. What has gone wrong? Would anyone from Newquay like to comment?

There must have been some slipshod defending last weekend as there were four own goals scored, which must be close too or a record. Gerens James of Ludgvan scored a hat-trick to add to his four the previous week and has moved clear at the top of the Golden Boot Award. His nearest rival, Jowan May is three behind on 22 but his team, St Ives have four games in hand, so the race should tighten-up in due course.

Talking of St Ives, what a win they had on Saturday, beating high flying Helston of the SWPL in the Durning Lawrence Cornwall Charity Cup.

With the score 1-1 at full-time and after extra-time they held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties and make their way into the semi-finals.

The League hold their committee meeting next Thursday and the draw for the semi-finals of the League Cup will be made and the venues chosen. If your club is interested in holding a cup semi or even the final make sure a representative attends.

Also keep checking the various websites, read the paper, etc as fixtures are changing all the time as the league try to get as many games in as possible, especially the teams who share with cricket clubs who have to squeeze in all their home games before the start of the cricket season.

Of those clubs, St Day have seven home games to play, Ludgvan eight and Holmans ten. So there will not be too much travelling for these teams for a week or two.
