The company which plans to build a new cinema in Newquay is promising it will be one of the South West's flagship entertainment venues.

WTW Cinemas announced this week it has completed the purchase of the former Vic Bars site on Crantock Street and the adjoining building.

It is believed the project will run into several million pounds and will see the two existing buildings demolished and a four-screen cinema built.

David Williams, director of WTW Cinemas, said: "This will be a flagship cinema for the South West if it gets the go-ahead.

"There seems to be a large groundswell of support for a cinema in Newquay and we just hope that the planners at Restormel Borough Council like the plans we are going to put forward."

Newquay has been without a cinema since the closure of the Camelot – now the Walkabout bar – in 1995.

The new cinema could be split with two screens on the top floor and two screens on the ground floor.

Plans are currently being drawn up by NBDA Architects, who have a strong pedigree in the industry.

The plans are expected to go before Restormel Borough Council later this year.
