Flat fire closes Penryn town centre
UPDATE: The road is now reopened.
Tues 4.30pm: Part of Penryn is currently closed off after a fire in a three storey building in Lower Market Street.
Fire fighters are currently on scene after receiving the call at 3.20pm this afternoon.
The fire broke out in a first floor flat above the Swamp Circus shop and two crews from Falmouth, along with a team from Truro are in attendance.
They discovered "thick black" smoke coming out of the windows of the property.
Group manager Steve Halstead said: "Two fire fighters forced entry and quickly put out the fire which was in the hallway.
The two occupants were already out of the building.
"The alarms sounded and it just emphasises the advantage of having working fire alarms."
After ensuring the flat was empty, the crew checked the five other flats in the building, but all were unoccupied at the time.
The flat where the blaze broke out is currently uninhabitable, said Mr Halstead, and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
It is advised that all motorists avoid the town centre as the roads both sides of the Town Hall are closed to traffic.
