Fly races to victory in here here herey
THE pilot gig crew of Fly are celebrating after winning the Gardener Powell Trophy on Thursday night.
In a tough race from Newquay Harbour, Fly came home 30 seconds ahead of her nearest rivals.
In smooth conditions, with only a light westerly breeze, the competition quickly became the scene of a battle between the five gigs; Active, Good Intent, Newquay, Dove and eventual winners, Fly.
The trophy is named after a well-known businessman and jeweller of the 1950s, who moved to the area from Birmingham. Gardener Powell had a keen interest in maritime matters and quickly became involved in the harbour and with the rowing club.
The winning crew were: Richard Boyden, David Ball, Rob Wigley, Chris Tilyard, Tommy Gee, Chris Martin and the cox was Ray Taylor.
They were presented with their trophies by Chaz Mills, former rower and Newquay pilot gig trustee.
The club is also hosting the Children's Hospice South West charity gig race on June 21, at Newquay Harbour.
The Newquay Guardian is entering a team and all are welcome to come down and witness the fun.
● Newquay Rowing Club has also recently been awarded a £250 grant from the Sita Cornwall trust to be used to buy a cover for the new gig, Spy.
