Founder of Padstow Sea Cadets presents annual awards

THE man who founded Padstow Sea Cadets was the special guest of honour at their annual awards evening.

Captain Frank Sluman formed the unit 50 years ago, and presented the cadets with their awards on what was a very successful evening.

The unit was full to the brim with local supporters and the evening was hosted by the cadets' newly appointed 1st Lieutenant, Petty Officer Richardson.

Best Junior Cadet: Cadet Cox; Best Cadet Trophy: Cadet Benwell; Best Ordinary Cadet: Ordinary Cadet Ellis; Leading Cadet: Leading Cadet Cheetham; Boatwork Achievement: Ordinary Cadet Lindsey; Shield for Community Service: Ordinary Cadet Ellis; Best Improvement: Cadet Phillipson; Trophy for Dinghy Sailing: Ordinary Cadet Govier; Shooting Trophy for the Year's Best Improver: Ordinary Cadet Lindsey; Raised the most fundraising money: Ordinary Cadet Tobin; Mayor's Cadet: Ordinary Cadet Ellis; Award for Cadet of the Year: Leading Cadet Richardson; Staff Member of the Year: Civilian Instructor Connell.

The following day, Padstow Sea Cadets joined Falmouth cadets for a visit on board HMS St Albans, a Type 23 anti-submarine frigate that was docked in Falmouth. The cadets had a full tour of the ship including the bridge and ops room and all had a firefighting demonstration.

The cadets are currently in training to compete in the Cornwall District Drill competition at HMS Raleigh.
