The spotlight was shining brightly upon Fowey Community College drama students when they took to the stage at Hall for Cornwall as part of a celebration of Cornish poet, Charles Causley.

The Year 9 and 10 students performed, 'Just Visiting', a devised piece of work based on Causley's poem, 'The Ten Types of Hospital Visitor' at the 'Carousel of Causley', a creative project initiated by Kernow Education Arts Partnership (KEAP) as part of the Cornish Secondary School Conference.

They were among 15 other Cornish schools who had gathered at the venue on January 28 to perform and celebrate the works of the Launceston born poet and writer.

The Fowey pupils are currently studying for their Arts Award GCSE, and Year 9 student, Cameron McHardy relished the chance to tread the HFC stage.

"It was a really great day and I enjoyed being part of it," he said, "The stage was much bigger than I had expected.  It was brilliant performing to all those people."

Fowey Community College head of drama, Miss Louisa Hall believed the event to offer a great chance for students to get a glimpse into the workings of the professional theatre.

She said:  "This has been a great opportunity for the students to perform on a professional stage.

"They have had access to all aspects of how a theatre runs, from promotion to production. For this to happen at the Hall for Cornwall is a great boost for the students."

Helen Reynolds, Information and Development manager with KEAP highlighted the continued rising standards of the students performances.

She added: "Again the standard of the work has risen, as it has year on year, and this shows what an important annual event this is for sharing each-others work, gaining inspiration, and raising the benchmark in terms of young people's performance.

"And it has opened up Causley's work to another generation of young people, which was also the aim!"

The Fowey Community College Drama students will perform 'Just Visiting' again, at the Fowey Festival of Words and Music when it takes place this May.
