IN THE wake of the news that plans are afoot to bring a new supermarket to the town of Fowey residents will gather tonight on the quay to voice their concerns.

The informal meeting will be held at 6.15pm prior to the monthly town council meeting and organisers are hoping to draw a large crowd as the fight to stop the planning has drawn plenty of local support.

A new Facebook group, 'Stop the Supermarket – Part 2' has been launched drawing over 100 members in its first few days and locally produced flyers have been distributed throughout the town.

Fowey town councillor, Sherlee Gudmunsen, has also vocally criticised the plans believing them to be a huge threat to town centre traders and Fowey as a whole.

"I'm very worried about this," she said. "We will probably lose smaller local businesses who have been trading in the town for many years, it will literally kill the town."

Mrs Gudmunsen's voice adds to that of Cornwall councillor, Sally Bain, who, regarding the plans, told Cornish Guardian last week that "there is no need for one and the majority of people in Fowey don't want it".

It's not the first time Fowey residents have fought proposals for a big store.

The last time a supermarket was in the works residents and business owners took to the streets in peaceful protest and launched a similar Facebook page.

Those plans were eventually refused and that's an outcome it seems a majority of Fowey people will be hoping to see repeated at the end of what could be another long fight with planners Albourne Developments.

Fowey resident, James Earee, is firmly against the supermarket plans and is among the group of local people willing to fight the development to save the features that currently see visitors flocking to the picturesque town and that they believe will be damaged if the plans are approved.

He said: "The proposal is to build on an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, cutting across St Catherine's Parade, a well-loved walk, and also within a conservation area."

Mr Earee shares the belief of many within Fowey that the food store would have a negative effect on local businesses and also ruin the town's unique character.

He hopes to see a good turnout for the informal town quay meeting tonight.

"The meeting is to bring together those in opposition," he said, "so that we can further our stand against this totally inappropriate food store by a developer whose sole interest is for personal gain, and not about the lives and livelihoods of Fowey residents.

"We'd encourage wider involvement by asking those who have not already joined our Facebook page, to do so – Stop the Supermarket, part 2! – and to lodge their objections online at http://planning.cornwall.gov.uk pre-application number PA13/00295/PREAPP."
