An inquest into Mr Mullan's death was opened and adjourned on Wednesday. His body was found at his home on Sunday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder following his death and has since been released on police bail, pending further inquiries, until January 14, 2013.

The formal opening of the inquest heard the body of Mr Mullan, who was unemployed, was identified by his father.

It was also stated that a forensic post-mortem examination was carried out at Derriford Hospital, but the cause of death has yet to be ascertained.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said at the time Mr Mullan's body was found that they believed he may have been assaulted some days before his death.

Detective Chief Inspector David Thorne is heading the investigation, which a police spokesman yesterday said was still "an ongoing murder inquiry".

The inquest has been adjourned to a date yet to be set.
