Redruth forward Chris Fuca is looking forward to the club going in a new direction under new head coach Adrian Edwards this season.

The Cornish club consolidated their position within National League Two South with a sixth-placed finish last season following relegation the previous year.

Redruth have preferred not to set a tangible target this term, but Fuca believes his side can improve upon their away form and overall consistency.

"Away from home we need to get a little edge which we have not had," he said. "We were not dominant in every game so there are improvements to be made, especially on the road.

"We haven't put a position on where we expect to come – you only set yourself up for a fall if you do that. We need to start well and build momentum."

Redruth began pre-season training yesterday. Edwards, who previously served the Reds as a conditioning coach, has set his players a challenging fitness programme.

And while Redruth have traditionally been slow starters, their summer workload should ensure they reach the opening game of the League Two season against Taunton, on September 1, in excellent condition.

"You have to get your intensity right in training," said Fuca. "We've got a good pre-season training programme set out now and we can target the first games of the season with real purpose."

Fuca was one of seven players to re-sign for the club at a players' meeting last Friday. Redruth had already confirmed 17 on their 2012-13 season squad list with more set to follow over the coming weeks.

Strength in depth will be key to Redruth improving their performances this season and pushing back towards League One over time.

Fuca said: "We can't say you are a National One squad when so many of the boys who are still here were relegated. I think we've got the ability to play there, it is just getting that performance level every week.

"Last year, once you got through the 20 good players we had, there was not that depth coming through to replace injuries. It looks like we'll have a bigger squad this year and that will help us get back to those standards and maybe we can be pushing those at the top of the league."
