Funding for 60 affordable extra care homes
Sixty affordable 'extra care' homes for older people look set to be built in the South Hams after a successful bid for government cash to the tune of £1.5 million.
The money from the Department of Health along with contributions from the South Hams District and Devon County Councils will pay for the multi-million pound scheme which is part of the Riverside development in the town. Extra care housing enables older people to enjoy a healthy, active and independent lifestyle in the community and is seen as a modern alternative to a residential home.
Councillor Jonathan Hawkins, for South Hams council, said: "We cannot underestimate the challenge of meeting the needs of our older population and this development will go a long way to providing an affordable choice in our district.
Across the Riverside development 45% of the properties will be affordable. The extra care scheme will be delivered in partnership with Galliford Try, Devon County Council and a local housing provider.
