A STALWART of Penlee RNLI’s fundraising committee, whose husband was lost in the 1981 lifeboat tragedy, has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.

Janet Madron, whose husband Stephen was killed in the Penlee Lifeboat Disaster, will receive a British Empire Medal for her services to maritime safety.

The 64-year-old has been a fundraiser for the RNLI since the seventies and under her stewardship the Penlee RNLI Ladies’ Guild has raised no less than £375,000 since 2000.

Mrs Madron also volunteers regularly at the lifeboat station shop and has been highly commended for raising funds by speaking to groups about her experiences.

Last year she wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron in an attempt to safeguard the future of the tug Anglican Princess, which was due to be decommissioned.

Mrs Madron said: “It’s really amazing to think that I have been picked for this award. I haven’t done it for acknowledgement, I did it because I enjoy it, like many other people, there are a lot of people working for the RNLI.

“It’s just been a big part of my life, I was involved when Stephen was alive, after he was lost at sea I knew that I wanted to carry on and I carried on.

“I just enjoy it, I enjoy what I do. It’s a very big part of my life and I just feel I’m doing my little bit to keep our lifeboat afloat, making sure they have what they need, such as the latest equipment. I don’t do it for any real reason.”

“A recipient that is worthy amongst all the fame & fortune seekers being rewarded for charging us to watch as they line their own pockets.”
