Gale-force winds and heavy rain on New Year's Day in Cornwall
New Year’s Eve revellers in Cornwall might need to rethink their fancy dress as heavy showers and gales are forecast.
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for New Year’s Day and warned of flooding in Cornwall.
Forecasters said there could be up to 40mm of rain on south-facing coasts accompanied by gales with winds up to 60mph.
This Christmas has seen a succession of storms with the latest rough weather this morning bringing trees down and flooding roads.
A spokesman for the Met Office said of the New Year’s Day weather: “With ground already saturated over much of this area, the public should be aware of the risk of further localised flooding.”
Thousands of extra visitors are expected to come to Cornwall for the New Year’s Eve festivities with St Ives, Newquay and Looe all traditionally filled with people in costume.
