The discussion will then be opened to the audience, with local residents having the opportunity to express their views.

Mrs Newton said: "Like any new policy the proposals for same sex civil marriage are liable to be misunderstood, these meetings are an excellent opportunity for people to learn the actual details of the proposals and to listen to different points of view regarding them."

On Friday a morning meeting will be held at Diocesan House, Kenwyn, Truro from 10am to midday and an evening meeting held at the Chapter House of Truro Cathedral from 6pm to 8pm. Local residents wishing to participate in the meetings are asked to register their attendance through Mrs Newton's website www.sarahnewton.org.uk or by calling her office on 01872 274 760.

“She does not Ned to worry about her majority as a lot of former liberal voters will vote labour and therefore let her in again.”

“I think this is a very sensible move by Mrs Newton.

I suspect that there are more votes to be lost in Falmouth / Truro by supporting gay marriage than in opposing it, though if she opposes it, it won't do her reputation much good with her party bosses.

Principles aside, Mrs Newton's majority is only in three figures and if she gets this wrong it could cost her her parliamentary seat.”

“This MP should have the courage of her convictions assuming she believes in something. Tories had the brass neck to have a go at Labour over 'wasting' time on the fox hunting debate yet are trying to save their necks on this divisive issue for them. Pity they did not out in so much care and attention before the Tories and liberals voted to cut benefits today.”
