Gearing up for a Falmouth Christmas
ORGANISERS are working on the programme of events for Falmouth's Christmas festivities.
And it is hoped to double the entries to last year's entry for the Santa Run and fill the town with 1,000 people dressed as Father Christmas on December 15 in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care. To register call 01726 66868 or e-mail rwiltshire@cornwallhospice.co.uk
Town manager Richard Gates is encouraging traders to join Sunday opening and late-night shopping on Thursdays and said: "I think there has been a lack of confidence in the past. Not knowing what's open has discouraged people from coming in.
"We can't have people coming in and having nowhere to spend their money.

"Last year we had a cruise ship come in on a Sunday and passengers were showing the police their credit cards and asking where they could spend it as little was open."

The lights switch-on will kick off late-night shopping on November 29, with a schoolchildren's lantern parade and other activities. Weekend activities will include a fancy dress parade on December 8, a Christmas festival on Events Square and street theatre performances.

“I just want to add my voice to the appeal for Sunday & late night (Thursday) shopping. It may not pay off this year, but if everyone sticks to it it will start to pay of in subsequent years. After all, who had heard of the Oyster Festival in the early days? 15 years on it is one of the most popular festivals on the Falmouth calendar. If we all work together, we can de-seasonalise the town and keep it vibrant all year round!”
