CORNWALL opened their South West Counties Championship campaign with a thoroughly deserved victory at Wadebridge Town's Bodieve Park on Saturday.

Penzance's Callum George scored the all-important goal, though Tommy Matthews' men should have won more comfortably after dominating for much of the second half.

It took the Duchy youngsters a while to get going, though that was to be expected in their first game of the campaign - and for some playing with new team-mates for the first time.

But once they got into their stride, Cornwall were excellent to watch. And after a sluggish opening half hour, in which Devon looked the more dangerous, George's opportunist strike in the 31st minute allowed the hosts to take control.

The Magpies teenager was one of several players to impress, with Porthleven's Kyle Frazer and Newquay's Jake Street also catching the eye.

Cornwall created a host of scoring opportunities after the break, with George coming close to scoring his second when his goal-bound effort was somehow cleared off the line by Richard Edworthy.

Bizarrely, referee Rob Connolly, from Somerset, allowed nine minutes of injury time and Devon came agonisngly close to grabbing an equaliser when, in the ninth minute of stoppage time, Liam Gregory's diving header was supperbly pushed over by Newquay goalkeeper Sam Trudgian.

Cornwall: S Trudgian, J Bray-Evans, K Frazer, R Chinn, S Hill, C Sturgess, O Bennetts (J Vickers 68), J Street, C Bidgood, C George (E Wilton 77), J Burton (A Cole 83). Subs (not used): M Quick, T Cowling.
