George up for parliamentary title
"JUST doing his job" has helped a west Cornwall MP win a political nomination.
Andrew George, who represents St Ives and the Isles of Scilly, has been shortlisted for the Backbencher of the Year title in a scheme run by The House magazine.
Mr George, a member of the Health Select Committee who has frequently opposed the Government's reforms to the NHS, said he was delighted with his nomination, and though he was sometimes labelled as rebellious, he was just doing what he had been elected to do: getting on with the job of holding the Government to account.
"I realise that sometimes means I'm a thorn in their side, but just because I sit on the Government benches it doesn't mean to say that I should be uncritical.

"I know I've been highlighted as the most rebellious MP, but I don't see this as either a badge of shame or of pride – I'm just doing my job."
The results will be voted on by members of the Commons and the Lords and revealed at the end of the month.
The Liberal Democrat said he was surprised and honoured to be shortlisted for the awards, which aim to highlight parliamentary excellence.
"I realise I stand no chance of winning – parliamentary arithmetic at the very least is against it," he added.
"It's a surprise and an honour to find myself on the nomination shortlist. That's honour enough for me.
"I'm grateful to whoever proposed my nomination."

“Apparently at Westminster this award is known as Backbench {seat shiner} of the year...lets face it , given his record of doing nothing for his constituents, it's only surprising he has'nt won this award every year for the past 12 years.”

“I have to work out of Cornwall where my family live and see just how deprived Cornwall is, but people don't believe it they think it is a wealthy region. Andrew George has no interest in Cornwall and every interest in himself, how can regional pay be anything other than disastrous.”
