Redruth man George Richards puts pen to paper during cancer recovery
AN AUTHOR turned to the power of the pen while battling cancer, writing and selling a book on the life and times of his late grandfather.
George Richards, 65, wrote The Old Pound Cobbler while recovering from surgery for bowel cancer and is now selling it in Truro for charity.
The book tells the story of John Henry Richards, who survived the First World War and worked in the 'teddy bear' clay works, as they were known locally, in the Gover Valley in St Austell.
The heartfelt story depicts the hardships endured by his grandad, who also repaired shoes to make ends meet.

All of the proceeds from the book, which Mr Richards is selling at Sainsbury's in Truro today and next Thursday, are being donated to Cancer Research UK.
The author has already donated £500 to the charity after selling copies of the book. Mr Richards, of Redruth, said: "The book has been a healing process. My grandfather meant so much to me and he was such a highly respected character.
"Jack, as he was known, lived the whole of his life at a place called Old Pound in the heart of the China Clay country. He spent his working life within the clay industry and served in the trenches of France during the First World War.
"I wanted to give something back. There are many who have not been as fortunate as me to recover from bowel cancer. The feedback from those who have read the story has been encouraging. My fundraising is continuing and I still have copies for sale before I consider a second print."
Anyone interested in buying a copy can either call Mr Richards on 01209 212742 or search for it on eBay.
