DARREN Gilbert barked out a warning to his Bodmin players from the sidelines which boomed around Priory Park on Saturday.

"We're getting sloppy," was the bellow from the familiar voice. "Come on, lift your game."

Bodmin were leading poor Penzance 9-0 at the time but Gilbert squeezed another two goals out of a team who had done enough to win three or four games.

That's all you need to know about the reason why Bodmin continue to maintain the highest of standards as they strive for more trophies.

Most managers watching their team destroy the division's weakest side would have been sitting back in their dugout enjoying the fruits of their labour.

Not Gilbert. First and foremost he demands hard work from his players and if he sees their standards slipping, he lets them know. Even if they are winning 9-0.

Yes, Bodmin have some of the most talented players in the league. But the foundations of their success are provided by their work ethic.

Bodmin have responded to a first league defeat in a year by winning their next eight games in all competitions, and scoring goals at will.

They have scored four against Liskeard and Ivybridge, five against Odd Down and Torpoint, nine against Falmouth, and now 11 against Penzance.

And their strength in depth is frightening. On Saturday they were able to introduce top scorer Chris Luxton, midfield maestro Shane Krac and flying winger Luke Doddridge as substitutes.

Bodmin face a punishing run of fixtures over the next four weeks, including an FA Vase tie against Ashington, but they look well set for it.

Gilbert said: "We've got a big Christmas coming up but we are likely to be at full strength and if we get through this period we'll be well set for the new year."

Saturday's game was over as a contest within 16 minutes. That's how long it took for Adam Carter to bag a hat-trick against a Penzance side who seemed incapable of getting a challenge in.

Further goals from Olly Brokenshire and Carter again made it 5-0 before the half hour was up, and three goals in four minutes from Glynn Hobbs, Neil Slateford and Sam Matthews rubbed salt into gaping wounds.

At one stage Penzance goalkeeper Paul Williams was so exasperated by his team-mates' lack of possession and tackling that he held the ball up and roared: "This is what we're supposed to be playing with. Get hold of it."

But the punishment continued into the second half with Brokenshire, Hobbs and Slateford taking the score into double figures with almost half an hour left and Bodmin still pouring forward.

Krac could have added a couple more goals in the last ten minutes but by then the gods had taken pity on Penzance and decided they had taken enough punishment.
