The Greenaway Pro Surf is back in St Ives!
A HUGELY popular surf and music contest – in memory of a much loved St Ives man – is returning to the town next month, it has been announced.
The Greenaway Pro returns after a two year break on September 17-21 with an as yet unnamed Brit Award winning act confirmed as headliners, according to the organisers.
The event was first run in 2009 in memory of former St Ives Lifeguard Tom Greenaway, a popular bodyboarder, musician and artist who died after he was hit by a bus in London aged just 22.
Previous Greenaway Pros have involved surfing competitions that have drawn top competitors from around the world, plus film screenings and live music events – all things that Tom loved.

In previous years some of the UK's top surfers entered the competition, along with entrants from as far afield as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
All had either met or heard about the former Truro College student and the mark left on the community in St Ives by his untimely death.
And in past years Tom's parents, Ruth and John, and his brother, Joe, have attended the event started by his friends.
The non-profit festival will raise funds for charities including WaterAid, British Red Cross and Surfers Against Sewage.
Kicking off the return of Greenaway Pro in 2013 is a three day surf contest on Porthmeor Beach.
Categories will include pro, no-pro, longboard, bodyboard and under 18s.
The organisers say some of Europe’s finest surfers will take to the water with confirmed entries from pro surfers Jayce Robinson, Rebuyn Ash, Tom Lowe, Fergal Smith and Oli Adams.
The festival is also encouraging surfers of all levels to take part and actually offering sponsorship opportunities to the top four no-pros as well as what they say is the UK’s biggest cash prizes for a domestic surf competition.
After a day of competition at Porthmeor beach on Friday September 20, Greenaway Pro will then host an evening of acoustic music sessions and film screenings curated by iconic surf photographer Mickey Smith at the St Ives Cinema.
Mr Smith, best known for directing the multi-award winning short video ‘Dark Side of the Lens’, will premier his latest short film and introduce a series of intimate acoustic performances by still to be announced singer-songwriters.
The festival will then come to a close on Saturday September 21 at the Sandsifter, Hayle, with a party featuring live music and DJs until the early hours of the morning.
The line-up will be announced in the coming weeks but the organisers say a Brit Award-winning act has already been confirmed to headline.
New for 2013 is online competition 'Wave of the winter', encouraging body boarders to upload a video of their best wave in the UK or Ireland for the chance to win one year’s sponsorship and a £500 cash prize.
Videos can be viewed here.
The event will also incorporate “JR’s rip shredathon” where a pro surfer and a local surfer team up to compete for extra cash.
