Gritters out in force as drivers get ice warning
Motorists face further misery after days of flooding as temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing and ice over the wet roads.
Devon County Council warned drivers to take "extreme caution" last night after announcing that gritters would be going out in the early hours of this morning.
About 20% of the network was being gritted on those roads which carry 70% of the traffic today at 1am, with another possible run at 6am.
The cold snap, which could well add to the woes of the hundreds of people hit by flooding, was expected overnight last night and into today.

Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council's Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, said: "Obviously with all the recent flooding and so much water running off from the surrounding land, freezing temperatures could bring extremely icy conditions.
"Whilst the gritters will be out in force, don't assume a road has been treated.
"I would advise residents to drive with extreme caution certainly over the coming days whilst freezing temperatures are expected."
The Exeter-based Met Office last night forecast that temperatures were expected to drop to close to freezing in sheltered places but said today would brighten up with a "good deal" of dry weather and some sunshine.
