THE new east-west link road being built between Redruth and Camborne has been dubbed 'the road to nowhere'.

Members of the Trelawney Alliance have expressed their disappointment that Cornwall councillors have given approval for the next stretch of the road.

Roundabout

It is being built to accommodate the vast increase in traffic that will be generated by plans to build 11,000 new homes in the area.

At Camborne the road will end at the Tesco roundabout, feeding the vehicles along Wesley Street. Alliance chairman Jean Charman said: "It is well documented that this is already one of the most highly polluted streets in the county.

"Is Cornwall Council proposing to issue local residents with gas masks? We feel priority should be given to building an improved delivery route from Wilson Way, behind the leisure centre and onto Dudnance Lane."

Former county councillor John Woodward has been advocating such a road and said: "We need to get our commercial traffic moving efficiently in order to secure jobs and employment.

"In order to build this link road an important heritage building, Bartle's foundry, is set to be demolished.

"Trelawney Alliance fought to save this but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. This area is an important world heritage site, although for some reason the foundry has been excluded."

Requirement

He added: "These plans are set to destroy our rural way of life.

"Let's build homes for local needs, that would be a requirement of some 1,800 homes for the area and certainly not the 11,000 this government is trying to foist on us."
