Two Christian guesthouse owners who were ordered to pay damages after refusing to allow a gay couple to stay in a double room lost their appeal.

The challenge by Peter and Hazelmary Bull, who run Chymorvah House in Marazion, Cornwall, was rejected by three judges in the Court of Appeal in London.

They had appealed against a conclusion by a judge at Bristol County Court that they acted unlawfully when they turned away Martyn Hall and his civil partner Steven Preddy in September 2008.

Judge Andrew Rutherford ruled in January last year that the Bulls had breached equality legislation and ordered them to pay the couple a total of £3,600 damages.

The appeal judges heard that the Bulls thought any sex outside marriage was a “sin”, but denied they had discriminated against Mr Hall and Mr Preddy, from Bristol.

“Religion is not compulsory, but people's Christian beliefs should be respected. . At least until some finds something better.

My Grandfather always kept his Bible with him. . He was not a religious nut, just a Ship's Master who knew about the vagaries of nature at what it can throw at you; as do the farmers.

He was leader of men; not a destroyer of decency and humanity that we are now seeing.

See Operation Rubble. . Or search 'The Blockade Busters'. These are the men who kept this a free country. . They were able to do it because God gave them the strength to try.

“It is not the Bible itself. I am a non-believer who tries to keep an open mind. I often turn to the Bible for inspiration, the Sermon on the Mount being one of my favourite passages.

My reference is about quoting it as an argument. If we debated that way we could all just extract massive texts from sites on the internet favourable to our viewpoint and lob them at each other. Not very original.”

“I am sorry if quoting passages from the Bible doesn't fit too well with some, only to say this is permitted in this country at this moment in time, for how much longer I wouldn't like to hazard a guess.”

“Yes quoting from the bible is the same as me dropping some pebbles on the floor and declaring they fell into a pattern on the floor that spelt the words "God is Gay."
And then quoting that in all future references to religion and homosexuality.”

"It's to combat the Lunatic Left Red Arrower gangs that paralyse these boards, youngcornwall."

With a topic as serious as this one, where the foundation of our very existence is being brought into question, I would have thought red arrows or anything else would be a minor distraction.”

“Not all Christians 'refuse to help homosexuals' actually.

I think Archbishop Desmond Tutu is one of the most compassionate, enlightened and inspiring people in the public eye. And he has certainly done a lot for his country. Read up his views on the topic.

I am for tolerance and cannot see the point of excluding people for what they are. I doubt most gay people 'chose' their orientation or were manipulated into it by anyone else, it is just the way they developed. I do think this gay couple went out of their way to manufacture this situation to highlight their case but my wider point is about tolerance.

The other thing I find interesting on topics like this (and discussing Darwinism with creationists) is it is rarely very long before the arguments from religious people turn into quotes from the bible. I don't think that is a persuasive argument.”

“Why do Christians refuse to help in homosexual relationships as the Bulls did ?
Because as Christians they believe the Bible.
    "... their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature;
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly ..." Romans 1: 26-27
Do not be confused by those who may call themselves Christians and yet condone such behaviour, they have an evolving religion that conforms to the spirit of the age. Man is always fallible, that is why we have the Scriptures, they do not change.”

“It appears that this thread has been given over to repetitive postings, why I am not quite sure. However, whatever our opinions may be, the word of God stays the same.

"Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God". 1 Corinthians 6:9-10”
