The 250th anniversary of Methodist founder John Wesley first preaching at Gwennap Pit is being celebrated at the famous amphitheatre near Redruth tomorrow afternoon.

Wesley first appeared at the venue on September 5, 1762, stating afterwards that "the wind was so high at five that I could not stand in the usual place ". At 5pm tomorrow, the Reverend Dr Leslie Griffiths will take the place of the 18th century churchman by preaching a service of celebration.

Following the outdoor service, tea will be served in Lanner Chapel Hall at 6.30pm and a drama – And John Wesley Came To Cornwall – written specially for the occasion by Cornish playwright and actor Tony Jasper, will be performed.
