Hayle to St Ives 'harbour taxi' given go-ahead for Easter
A shuttle boat service from Hayle to St Ives has been given the green light to start a trial over the summer season.
From Easter, the so-called ‘harbour taxi’ will leave from North Quay, taking passengers across the bay to St Ives Harbour.
The 16-person rib will rely on the right weather and sea conditions to run the 25 minute service.
St Ives Rib Ride, owned by John Johnson and son Adam, are running the boat trips, which have been supported by Hayle Harbour Authority, local councillors and MP George Eustice.

Mr Johnson said: “I am really looking forward to this new and exciting venture which I hope will be excellent for Hayle.”
He admitted the scheme was a bit “trial and error” with ticket prices not yet confirmed.
Visitors wishing to take a trip will be able to check the website at the beginning of the week to see what times trips are available, and will be able to purchase tickets for a single or return trip.
Talks have taken place between the service provider and holiday parks in Hayle to encourage holidaymakers to make use of the park-and-ride to help ease congestion in the height of the summer season.
Mr Johnson said a back-up bus will run between the towns when the weather conditions do not permit travel by boat.
“It will certainly help reduce traffic congestion and ease the pressure on parking in St Ives, hopefully boost trade with local shops and at the same time it will be a pleasurable scenic trip for holiday customers,” he added.
George Eustice MP said he has been looking at ways to connect St Ives and Hayle across the bay and thinks the shuttle boat will benefit both areas.
“Between them, Hayle and St Ives have a lot to offer and a sea link for the two towns would be a fantastic resource, benefitting tourists and local businesses alike.”
Hayle town councillors and the Chamber of Commerce have expressed approval for the scheme, which they say is a way of bringing more people into the town.
John Coombe, councillor for Hayle South, said: “It’s a wonderful idea. I am definitely in support of it. I hope it catches on. It’s a great idea for people to walk down from the Towans and catch the taxi from the river over to St Ives and back.”
If the trial season is a success, there is a possibility of adding an extra route from South Quay in the future.
