HELSTON Community College's head teacher has called for the road to be closed outside the college to end the "crazy" traffic situation he fears could result in a serious accident.

Patrick McGovern revealed that the college, which has nearly 1,700 students and is among the largest in Cornwall, is now also the only one in the county that it still on a split site.

This means the campus is bisected by two busy roads.

Alternative

Dr McGovern is so concerned about the problem that he is suggesting one of the roads, Church Hill, be closed during the school day, and points to at least one suitable alternative route for traffic.

He told the West Briton: "We asked independent consultants to come along and have a look (at the campus).

"They said our efforts to safeguard our students were outstanding but they said keeping our children safe would be difficult because of road safety... I don't know of any other school with the problem. It is crazy.

"They didn't know of any other places with a busy road running through the school."

The main college building is separated from outbuildings and a sports field by Church Hill and from the old grammar school building and new music block by Belmont Road.

Dr McGovern said the situation had concerned him throughout his seven years as principal at the college.

"Sooner or later a child is going to come running across Church Hill from the rugby field and get hit by a car," he said. "I think Church Hill should be closed off during the opening hours of the college.

"Drivers can use Station Road... you could simply put two barriers across the road during school hours."

Dr McGovern said he often saw and heard cars speeding along Church Hill from his office. He added that people driving within the speed limit could seriously injure a person walking across the road.

“It is interesting to read the proposal from Dr McGovern and supporting comments. However, vast numbers of families with children live in Gwealwartha/ Gwarth-n-Drea/ Pendeen Park & Trenethick Fields & have children that attend Parc Eglos. What suggestion is there for parents who have no choice but to drive their children to this school, as you have to access the roads highlighted for closure to get to there & traffic probelms ther are significant. Also children at Helston School are educated to cross a road safely at primary school & should be capable of crossing the main roads and walking on pavements properly, which I'm positive they are & do this on a daily basis. I have witnessed several Helston School children intentionally run accross the roads infront of traffic, then start laughing. I attended Helston School & had to cross the main road described to walk between lower & middle/upper School for 7 years, as have many countless other former pupils. I am curious - how many accidents have their been along that road since the schools have been operated, which is a 40 to 50 year period, considering the thousands of pupils that have attended Helston School? I'm all for protecting childrens welfare, but then where will these proposals end? Like having footbridges build across the roads to our estates, so there is no chance of risk at all????”

“I am a resident of Church Hill who walks my child to Parc Eglos. Often I find myself having to step into the road because of the volumes of children heading to school. I agree something has to be done before an accident happens it amazes me how one has occured already. Perhaps if the 20mph (yes Church Hill is meant to be a 20mph zone) was inforced - more signage, better speed bumps etc even a plain clothes copper with a speed gun would help.

The traffic has got increasing worse over the last few years after the completion of Gwealwatha/Pendeen Park and Trenethick Fields Estate - Church Hill has become a rat run to the Penzance Road and with the best will in the world worker from Water-ma-Trout will always race down the road at 5pm on their way home etc.

I agree the children need to be educated re roadsense, so do the drivers re speeding and hazard perception - but as a compromise howabout making the road one way and widen the pavements???

I am glad that Dr McGovern realises there is a problem and I support him on this.

Footbridge is a nice idea in theory, but it will never get planning permission as it will look ugly and the children just won't use it, kids will be kids!”

“You are forgetting Dave that a lot of these kids have not been taught road sense by their parents who leave that job to the teachers and then complain when their offspring does something stupid. Good road sense on behalf of the students and responsible driving would avoid any danger. Changing roads would serve no purpose.”

“What Dr McGovern is suggesting might be for the best of motives but would be hugely disruptive. His proposal that traffic should use station road would not work because it emerges into a one way system and could not therefore replace the existing two way system beside the school. A more practical solution might be to build foot-bridges over the two roads concerned and require all students crossing to use them. For Church Hill another alternative might be to place safety barriers along the edge of the pavements except where a zebra crossing could give a safer means of crossing. This isn't rocket science!”
