Headteacher's apology to parents over Feast Day
A HEADTEACHER who clashed with the church and the town mayor when she broke the town's longest running tradition has backed down.
Jackie Steele infuriated many in the St Just community by breaking the custom of giving school children Feast Monday off school.

However, following an article in The Cornishman on Thursday, Miss Steele has written a letter of apology to all parents.
It reads: "I am writing to apologise that our focus on teaching and learning at Cape Cornwall School, whilst leading to positive change in the school as demonstrated by our recent OFSTED inspection, has allowed us to have overlook the importance of Feast Day to the local community."
The head teacher who took over the school in January, is giving parents the option of either allowing their child to receive learning and education in school or attending Feast Day.
"If you decide that you wish your child to continue their learning in school on Feast Day, they will be able to take part in our Feast Day assembly and free lunch," she said.
The 14th century Feast Monday has long been held as a family event; the school has always closed and St Just school children have always taken part.
Miss Steele told The Cornishman she was sorry that her decision had upset so many in the community.
* Cape Cornwall School's recent OFSTED report recognised that the school is "improving rapidly".
It stated: "Pupils say they find the school more interesting and their spiritual, moral and social development is good, as shown by their improved behaviour and good attitudes to learning."
See Thursday's Cornishman for the report.

“OK TOM AND JUSTIN CALM DOWN!
How did we get from St Just Feast Day to captialism???
Whatever system of government is in place you get the same problem Orson Welles taught us that. ~Just as the horse said "I will work harder". No one can really be bothered to stand up and say "this is all wrong, I want something better", they do but only in places like this where no-one's really listening to them.
Both of you go out today and do a random act of kindness to a stranger as pennance for your folly!”

“Dear, dear,Tom. I haven't put foward any deliberate misinformation at all!,I have spoken the truth as to why local communities have suffered under the hands of political dictator's who have created an enviroment of deliberate boom and bust from within are enconomy, and like I have said attacked the very people who are the most vulnerable in society with the philosophy of capitalism. Money over people Tom. Cornwall deserves better from it's political or should I say BIG BUSINESS master's who rule this country with an iron fist, who you seem to support with an open heart!...very sad. The power of money and those who have a vested intrest in controling the flow of capitalism, they will never give this power to the people who really deserve it,THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY because they are determined to waste all of it on bailling out large banks with billions of pounds of hard working taxpayer's money. It's a good philosophy,CAPITALISM...a.......Tom!...”

“Oh dear Justin, the only person who's mentioned anything about a distorted mind is you. You wrote "The capitalist age we live in demands that every culture MUST abide by a new set of rules, which means that know one must have individual identites or a true sense of social community." That is not a matter of opinion, it's quite simply an untrue statement. Plenty of people have individual identities and have a sense of belonging in their community, even in this age of capitalism. Your statement is therefore false; there is no MUST about it. Either your view of capitalism is distorted or you deliberately putting forward misinformation. Capitalism is purely about making money. There is no compulsion on societies to disgard their heritage and many societies make capitalism work for them by charging entry fees to look at cultural monuments and museums. In those cases capitalism helps to preserve and maintain distinct individual cultures because things cost a lot of money to repair and look after. By all means express an anti-capitalist opinion, but don't pretend capitalism is something it isn't. Capitalism is a philosophy and system that can be used for good or bad - it's people that decide the outcome. Cornish people can either shun it and whine about our consequent raw deal or we can embrace it, gain a higher standard of living and use it to protect our culture and heritage.”

“Sorry Tom,but that's just the problem with the world today, people delude themselves into beliveing a false sense of secuirty with CAPITALISM when so much damage is done to the wider communites through money and the people who control the flow of it!. Cornwall is suffering under the legacy of the service industry culture, where the tourist service sector has been allowed to take control over other more important long term jobs which Cornwall needs but will never get.The Conservatives destroyed the manufacturing base of Britain and Cornwall which left so many people without proper jobs and the legacy of economic capitalism continues to this day with New Labour who are determined to create a Britain/Cornwall economically worse off in the future with more attacks on rural life and cheap service sector jobs!....My mind isn't distorted Tom, I just look at life from a different point of view.”

“I think you've got a bit of a distorted view of capitalism Justin. Capitalism is about making money. If money can be made from tradition and heritage (and it can) then both are in capitalism's interests. It's about time Cornish patriots recognised that and harnessed the enormous power of capitalism for its cause.”
