Health carers: Doctor and nurse team retire
THE Sexual Health Hub team at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH) has marked a double retirement for two North Cornwall ladies who have worked for the family planning service in the county for a combined length of 60 years.
Doctor Di Gurd and nurse Jenny Cloke, who are both from Bude, have carried out a range of different roles during their careers in the service. Jenny was a school nurse who worked alongside Di and, due to their love of family planning, decided to build a young people's clinic in Bude, to help support them and educate them.
"We already had the right contacts, due to working in family planning for such a long time, and we both loved what we did and being able to help people," explained Di.
"The clinic works really well as young people get to know you, which is very important when you are working closely with them."
In 2010, Di and Jenny had their outstanding contribution recognised as recipients of an RCHT Extra Mile award, after being nominated by their receptionist, as she was so impressed by the service they provide to their patients.
"We always like to make ourselves accessible to our patients and we often let them contact us at home and we have even met up with some on Christmas Day," said Di.
Frances Fuller, clinical lead at the Sexual Health Hub at RCH, said: "They are such a dedicated group, patients love them to bits. They are fantastic members of the team, so jolly and they will be missed tremendously."
