Penzance heliport signs superstore deal
PENZANCE heliport has signed a deal with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s to sell the site for redevelopment, it was announced today.
British International says the agreement provides the company with a financial platform to “consolidate” its main UK operations in Cornwall and provide a boost to the regional economy.

Penzance Heliport
The service between Penzance and the Isles of Scilly will continue to operate from the site throughout the 2010/2011 seasons.
The sale is subject to a successful planning consent for a new store following a public consultation with the Penzance community.
British International managing director Tony Jones said: “The agreement with Sainsbury’s is a welcome opportunity. It means that we should be able to continue operating a helicopter passenger service between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly beyond 2011.
“We will be finalising our relocation plans over the coming months and will be working with Sainsbury’s and the local community regarding proposals to regenerate the site in Penzance.”

“Supermarket chains always use the "creating jobs" argument to get their way. What elected politician can reject it. What is never calculated or admitted, is that if total spend on consumables does not rise, the new store must inevitably take custom from existing outlets, leading to a LOSS of jobs and/or businesses elsewhere. If this is untrue, perhaps someone would be kind enough to correct me.”

“Ross, PZ - good luck on your Sainsburys job application, but I hope they don't test you on your written English!”

“I think many of you at at an age where you dont need to work or only work part time! I am 27 and only have a part time job so I welcome any new jobs in the area as I will be applying for a full time post.
If you dont like the idea of a new supermarket than dont come shopping there when its built, also I wont have to serve you neither.”

“Or to put it another way, a new Sainsbury's will be built 1/4 miles equidistant between two existing supermarkets. This is over-saturation and the proposal absolutely beggars belief.”

“There is no point building houses when everything else in the town is closing down. There needs to be more infrastructure before there is more housing in the town. The town should fight to keep the heliport.”

“Just what we need another supermarket. How long before there are no more local traders all driven out of business by the big supermarkets? This site could have been used to build houses at realistic prices for local people but then money, in this case Sainsburys, always talks.”

“I thought they wanted to move to St Just to cut fuel costs. Clearly this was never the case if they are looking at moving to Newquay.”

“The latests news is that British International are considering moving their operations to St Just and/or Newquay Airport.
Now Cornwall Council 'own' the gross atmosphere polluting Newquay Airport which runs at around a £5M loss per annum.
This makes Cornwall Council a direct commercially interested party.
What are the chances of proper objective planning scrutiny and proper environmental, social and infrastructure impact assessment of such an unnecessary and increased carbon footprint relocation?
Cornwall Council's low carbon policy claims shot to shreds?

“My grandmother was driving along the road past the heliport one day in the 1960s. As a helicopter took off, the man behind turned his head to look at it and hit granny from behind, writing off her brand new Austin 1100.
He paid for a new car there and then in cash rather than go through his insurance, thanking granny for being "so discreet". When she asked what he meant, it turned out he wasn't supposed to be in Penzance at all - he was a businessman on a dirty weekend with his secretary!
But sorry to see the helicopter service go, and I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't last at Land's End - operating it out of LE alongside the fixed wing stuff that already flies out of there kind of destroys the unique selling point of the helicopter, doesn't it?”

“I enjoy driving to Penzance under the flight path of the helicopter, or watching it come in to land or take off...I'm sure many tourists enjoy it as well...
I'll be sorry to see it go”
