MULLION QUALIFIER:

Last Sunday Mullion ran their Daily Mail Foursomes national competition qualifier on a beautiful, still, initially dry morning, writes club captain Ken Whittle.

Of the 56 starters vice-captain to be, Dave Howe and his partner Steve Caddy were best with a fine nett 66.

This has been a good year so far for them both having got a share of first prize in a Texas Scramble earlier in the month.

Steve Riley and Martin Parsons only just lost out with a nett 66.5, despite taking a quintuple bogey on the eighth,

Rupert Spencer and Dan Reid were third on 68.

Golf is often a game of 'if only', and in Rupert and Dan's cas if it wasn't for the occasional escaped short putt and an unwanted excursion in one the bunkers in front of the eighth they could well have been easy winners.

That's life. They took it in their stride and were great company for the morning.

Maybe their playing partners' demonstration of overambitious bunker play on a previous hole influenced them.

The mixed betterball competition the previous Sunday saw club secretary Ray Griffiths and partner Margaret Melton amass 43 Stableford points, leaving vice captain Damian Hallett and Margaret Parsons on 39.

Simon and Margaret Thomas finished on 37 points with a better back nine thanks to Margaret holing out a 140 yard second shot!

PLAYERS MAKE SEMIS:

In round two of the Barry Mounter Trophy at Praa Sands on Sunday, Mike Jacka & Francis Vickerstaffe, Ed Leah & David Prowse, Victor Debarros & Phil Hales and Ken McIlroy & Nick Watters all won their matches and go through to next Sunday's semi-final.

In the Four Ball Better Ball, played alongside the Barry Mounter on Sunday, Jim Duffield & Roy Hillyar won with a fine 44 points. Steve Strick & Nigel Waters were second with 41 on the last nine holes from Ray Crebo & Simon Phillips. Mark Hatch & Mike Hatch were fourth with 40 points on the last six holes from Ray Pearce & Lenny Stevens.

Linda Gale, Judy Harris and Judy Thomas won the Ladies' 'Yellow Ball' on Saturday with 119 points. Lily Hiscott, Carole Jones & Phyllis Williams were second with 117, Anne Griffiths, Wendy Keys, and Elizabeth Murrish third with 102 and Jennifer Chambers, Rhonda Gannon and Anna Harry fourth with 101.

The Ladies play a Stableford on Saturday and the men play the semi-final of the Barry Mounter Trophy on Sunday. There is also a Stableford for those not involved in the Barry Mounter.

Next week, the Ladies play a nine-hole Stableford on Wednesday morning and the Ogres play Card 3 of the Bennett Cup in the afternoon.

GREAT WIN FOR VEAN:

Budock Vean put themselves through to the next round of the Daily Mail Team Classic with a thrilling 3-2 win over visitors Truro on Saturday.

It all came down to the last putt on the last green with Vean's Stephen Penrose emerging as the hero for the home team.

Truro's Darren Murrish was a tough opponent and playing the last one down, his fine tee shot, across the valley, on the 150 yard par three last certainly asked the question of Steve.

But he held his nerve to find the green himself before lagging his putt for a "gimme" par which Murrish could not better, leaving Steve the winner and thus securing a 3-2 win for Budock Vean.

Earlier, Truro's Grant Champion, better known for his Twickenham exploits with the oval ball, demonstrated he was no slouch with a small round one either as he won by three and two.

It looked even better for Truro when Simon Bray romped home in the second match by four and three. Vean were hitting back however, through Paul Upperton who was playing some terrific golf in securing an emphatic five and four win.

Richard Burton, the captain of Budock Vean, was also in no mood to let things slip and he also played inspired golf to win by five and four to set the stage for Stephen Penrose.

On Sunday, in poor afternoon weather Stephen was at it again as he won the latest round of the Roger Mildren sponsored Winter League with a fine haul of 40 points.

Despite a superb back nine haul of 23 points Richard Burton had to settle for the runners up spot with 39 points just edging David Penrose into third place on countback. David Gudzij scooped the back nine two jackpot at the 15th hole.

This Sunday is the February monthly medal sponsored by Richard Burton Windows.
